Frequently asked questions
- Where do these numbers come from?
- From NYC Open Data: the permitted event list for the coming month, a historical archive of the same list and a weekly DOT list of construction street closures. We keep daily totals and count them with SQL.
- Does a permit mean the street is closed?
- Not necessarily. A permit can be cancelled or changed, and only some permits close a street. The full-closure column counts permits whose closure type is a full street closure.
- Can I see where a closure is?
- No. We publish totals by borough and type only, with no event names or locations. Check the city's official listings for a specific street.
- How is the comparison with last year computed?
- We take the Saturday and Sunday 364 days earlier, the same weekdays one year back, from the city's archive of permitted events and compare the totals by borough.
